Whilst attending the Vis in 2015 it became apparent that there had not been a pre-moot in London that year.
Such an omission could not go repeated and undaunted by a complete lack of experience in mooting and still a relative newcomer to the Vis Moot, Peter set about the planning. The following year the first pre-moot was held.
Since the 2019 moot the pre-moot has been in association with the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (“CIArb”). Furthermore, from the same year there has been a panel discussion on the procedural aspects raised in the moot problem where distinguished jurists have considered the problem’s issues.
Each team will argue twice as Claimant and twice as Respondent on the Saturday. The top 4 teams will go onto semi-finals and finals on the Sunday. This seeks to replicate as much as possible the format in Vienna.
We are invariably heavily oversubscribed. An application does not mean that you have a place until we confirm it - usually just before Christmas. We seek a balance of teams from common law and civil law countries and from those who are new to the moot as well as teams with an established track record.
We seek to have a diverse selection of arbitrators and have had a retired Supreme Court judge and a trainee solicitor. Those with limited experience will be selected with an experienced chair. Nobody ought to feel excluded.
The pre-moot is held at the International Dispute Resolution Centre in London where some of the largest and most complex arbitrations are held in 'real life'. You will sit in the same rooms that are used in those arbitrations.
We hold a discussion on some of the issues raised in the Moot problem for coaches and arbitrators. This year it is generously hosted and supported by 39Essex with the following stellar panellists moderated by Peter Ashford More details and registration at:🔗 https://lnkd.in/efd26sTi
